Melissa has been quilting since she was 8 or 9 years old. She started quilting with her grandmother and was given her first sewing machine by grandma on her 10th birthday. She designed her first quilt pattern for her college dorm bed, Star Bright, which is still in our pattern collection today. Melissa has lived in a lot of different places, most recently spending 5 years working on her PhD at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She finds the inspiration for the quilts she designs in many different places. Along with designing for Melissa & Mom Quilts, she also designs for Villa Rosa Designs and most recently for Batik Textiles.
Eileen, “Mom”, has been quilting for 45 years and sewing for longer than that. She loves a wide variety of fabric styles, especially batiks, and enjoys putting together the quilts that Melissa designs. Melissa is the inspiration for all the quilt designs and she writes the patterns. Mom proofs the instructions and the fabric requirements and makes up many of the samples. She does trunk shows of their pattern collection and lectures on “The ins and outs of starting your own business.” She also teaches classes on the construction of several of their patterns.
